Deuce McAllister's future

Posted on: January 16, 2008 11:21 am

This is an open thread to discuss the future of Deuce McAllister.  Saints fans what are your thoughts?  As you well know this is his second major knee injury in three years.

Will he come back and be effective?  Do you want him back?

Can P. Thomas fill his role now or someday soon?

Should we look for some help at the RB position in the draft or FA?

Deuce McAllister's future

I think Duece has earned the right to come back and see what he has left. Who knows how effective he will be, but I think he is a standup guy, and if he thinks he is hurting the team more than helping he will step down. He's not your typical pre-madonna athlete. Drew may be the leader of the offense, but Duece is the heart. He loves the Saints and the region, and I hope he retires a Saint. Pierre Thomas may be able to help in the running game, but we haven't seen enough of him to know. One good thing about PT is everything we've seen so for looks good. If I was closer to the injury situation it would help, but they may drop Stecker this year and spent a 5 or 6 round draft pick on a bigger type back. Maybe even a home-grown Matt Forte type.

Peace,

BUB

Deuce McAllister's future

Great reply.  I agree with everything you said and he deserves a shot.  On the other hand i'm also excited to see what Thomas can do.  Lots of upside with him.

Deuce McAllister's future

I'm willing to bet that if necessary, Deuce would take a restructuring of his deal, or even a pay cut to continue to be a Saint. He makes his home in Mississippi still and he really does love the organization.  I agree that he has earned the right to come back and prove if he's still got the ability to be a power back. He's a strong man to begin with, exceptionally in fact. I think that he will be able to heal better than a lot of backs.  He healed well from the first one, and I think he can heal from the second one. He'll never be 100% and he's getting to the age where RBs really do begin to lose their effectiveness- see Shaun Alexander, but I couldn't imagine Deuce not retiring a Saint.

Deuce McAllister's future

Forgot to discuss Pierre.  I see great things in Pierre. To me he runs similar to Deuce, he absorbs initial contact and keeps moving forward. Like Deuce in his prime, even with mediocre blocking he can almost guarantee you 4 yards.  The fact that in his first start he did something no other Saints RB has ever done, 100 rushing/ 100 receiving in a game. That is also a good sign.  To me, Pierre can carry that power back load when the time comes. I have enough faith in him that I would give him 25 carries a game from the start of next season and limit Reggie's to 10.

Deuce McAllister's future

I think the Saints should allow him a chance to get back in, even if he's not the back he was in 2006 he still adds another dimension to this offense that I don't think Reggie Bush or Pierre Thomas can right now.

I don't think we should draf
